Read more about the history of the former Cistercian abbey at Altzella. In the Middle Ages this abbey was a decisive cultural, economic and political influence on the region. It had an important role in the stabilization and settlement of the area of the margrave of Meissen.

The order of the Cistercians was regarded as one of the most progressive and successful monastic orders during the Middle Ages. Margrave Otto had good reasons for selecting this order to secure both the monastery he founded and the future burial place of the Wettin family.
